Hope springs eternal. Across Europe, many designers already possess the skills we need to change the world.

What is this object about, who are the people behind it?

"RECI:DESIGN, images of recycling" was a festival that took place in Celje from 2015 to 2017. It was organised by Kulturno umetniško društvo 567, a cultural and artistic association. The main part of the festival was an exhibition of various design products created from waste materials, with workshops and events to highlight content relating to waste, obsolete materials and reuse. The programme booklet provides an overview of the items exhibited and of the programme accompanying the "RECI:DESIGN, images of recycling" festival in 2016. It was published at the conclusion of the festival.

What places is this object related to, how European/transnational is it?

The "RECI:DESIGN, images of recycling" festival was held in Celje. It brought together creators from all over Slovenia who make things from waste materials. The festival was attended mostly by visitors from Celje. In this respect, the festival was mainly of local importance, but tracing back the recycled products offers an international perspective. Old jeans, jumpers and umbrellas were most likely produced in Asia, imported into Europe, used initially for their original purpose and then processed in various places in Slovenia and finally exhibited in Celje.

Why and how did this object arrive in the museum’s collection?

The programme booklet for the "RECI:DESIGN, images of recycling" festival came to the Museum of Recent History Celje in 2016, when the museum participated in an exhibition as part of a festival taking place in various locations in the city. The museum exhibited two raincoats sewn from the fabric of old umbrellas by the fashion creator Romanna S. The programme booklet is part of the Urbano collection because it highlights urban practices, recycling trends and a sustainable lifestyle approach.

What is the relation of this object to waste?

The programme booklet for the "RECI:DESIGN, images of recycling" festival presents a range of products made from waste materials and worn-out items that have been given a new life by designers rather than ending up as waste. All products were part of an exhibition that took place in Celje in 2016 and showcased creative approaches to the use of waste materials. By being transformed into usable and decorative objects, these materials have once again become fit for use.
